Director’s Statement
In “Ciao amore, ciao,” I wanted to create a surreal comedy that serves as a metaphor for the absurdity of war, particularly focusing on the individual experiences of those caught up in its chaos against their will. The film follows Luca, whose mundane daily routine is abruptly interrupted by the appearance of a stranger in his bathroom—a stranger who seems to know him intimately.
The humor in the film arises from the unexpected and bizarre interactions between Luca and the intruder. These moments of confusion and tension reflect the disorienting and intrusive nature of war, where personal spaces and lives are violated without warning or reason. The characters’ dialogue, filled with misunderstandings and wit, underscores the irrationality and futility that often accompany conflict.
Through this surreal lens, I aimed to capture the personal disarray and helplessness that individuals feel. The stranger’s intrusion is a direct metaphor for how war enters the lives of ordinary people, disrupting their sense of normalcy and security. The seemingly trivial exchanges between the characters reveal deeper themes of invasion, resistance, and the struggle to reclaim one’s autonomy.
